TONIGHT’S TOPIC
THE RESTORATION OF THE MY ENA
TTTG founding Member, Henry Black, gives a presentation on the restoration of the MY Ena. Should be a great night. Here is a little background:
Designed by Sydney naval architect Walter Reeks, the MY Ena was built in 1900 by W M Ford Boatbuilders at Berrys Bay. Her owner was local banker and yacht racing enthusiast Thomas Dibbs. He named the yacht after his wife, Tryphena.
After a stint in the Australian Navy during WW1 as HMAS Sleuth, SY Ena became a Tasmanian trading vessel, renamed Aurore, and fitted with a diesel engine. During the 1970s Aurore did trawling work, harvesting scallops, and fishing for sharks. Then in 1981 the vessel hit an unidentified object and sank in the D’Entrecasteau Channel near Bruny Island.
Happily, a business syndicate salvaged MY Ena in the early 1980's. Shipwright Nick Masterman restored the Ena in 1987 to the yacht’s original specifications as a pleasure craft. In 2017, John and Jacqui Mullen donated the MY Ena to the Australian National Maritime Museum.
Can’t be with us in person? Then why not join in via Skype. Just contact Tom Marinov now via email tom@mcs-consulting.com.au for details on how you can participate on the night via Skype.
You can be sure of a warm welcome - the hall is air conditioned.
Tea and biscuits available (maybe coffee too if we can work the pods out!) and milk. Any questions, please contact me via email at secretary@tttg.org.au
